Composting

Composting is good for the environment and is a great benefit to lawn and garden. Compost is a wonderful natural fertilizer, retains moisture, and it has even been shown to reduce the number of weeds in a garden. About one–third of household trash is compostable, which can significantly reduce landfill waste.

Cabarrus County offers free backyard composting classes to county residents. Participants will learn how to turn food scraps and other household waste into a “soil builder” to enrich the red clay in their yards and gardens with compost. The class teaches residents how to compost properly to save time, energy, and to keep odors and animals at bay.

To learn more or to register for an upcoming class, email Pete Pasterz, Cabarrus County Recycling Coordinator, at papasterz@cabarruscounty.us, or call 704-920-3280.
